Stainless steel heat exchanger tubes are generally specified by outside diameter (OD), wall thickness and length. Frequently encountered examples include 3/4-inch OD (19.05 mm) and 1-inch OD (25.40 mm) tubing, supplied in wall thicknesses selected for the equipment design. These dimensions must also be accompanied by a material grade, product standard and clear wall-thickness ordering basis. tubacex.com
For heat exchanger manufacturers, EPC contractors and maintenance buyers, a size designation alone is insufficient. The tube must fit the tubesheet and support system, provide the required flow passage, and meet the mechanical and corrosion requirements of the application.
This guide from Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. explains how to read, compare and specify stainless steel heat exchanger tube dimensions for global B2B purchasing. It focuses on plain, round tubing used in shell-and-tube heat exchangers and condensers. Finned, corrugated and other enhanced tubes require additional dimensional information.
A basic dimensional description follows this format:
Outside Diameter × Wall Thickness × Length
For example:
19.05 mm OD × 1.65 mm wall × 6,000 mm length
Each dimension serves a different purpose:
| Dimension | Meaning | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Outside diameter, OD | Diameter across the outside of the tube | Determines compatibility with tubesheet holes, baffles and tube spacing |
| Wall thickness, WT | Thickness of the tube wall | Affects mechanical performance, internal flow area and heat conduction |
| Inside diameter, ID | Diameter of the internal flow passage | Affects fluid velocity, pressure drop and cleaning access |
| Length, L | Specified straight-tube or drawing-defined dimension | Affects assembly fit, available heat-transfer area and handling |
A complete order should also identify whether the wall thickness is specified on a minimum-wall, average-wall or nominal-wall basis.
Heat exchanger tubing is commonly identified by its actual outside diameter. Pipe dimensions often use nominal pipe size, or NPS.
For example:
These products are dimensionally different, even though both descriptions contain “1 inch.” Specify actual OD when purchasing replacement exchanger tubes. ---Gaugeable Tube Fittings
The following table provides inch-to-millimeter conversions for tube ODs encountered in heat exchanger and condenser work. It is a dimensional reference, rather than a guarantee that every size is available in every grade, wall thickness or manufacturing route.
| Tube OD, inches | Tube OD, mm |
|---|---|
| 3/8 | 9.525 |
| 1/2 | 12.700 |
| 5/8 | 15.875 |
| 3/4 | 19.050 |
| 7/8 | 22.225 |
| 1 | 25.400 |
| 1-1/4 | 31.750 |
| 1-1/2 | 38.100 |
These OD designations are represented in heat exchanger tube dimensional reference charts. Metric values above are calculated using 1 inch = 25.4 mm. cw-estgroup.com
Metric and inch-based dimensions should remain clearly identified. For example, 19.00 mm and 19.05 mm are different specified ODs. Substitution requires checking the applicable tolerances and tubesheet fit.
For replacement projects, confirm the original tube dimensions from the equipment drawing or manufacturing records. Measurements of worn, expanded or damaged tube ends may not represent the original supply dimensions.
Heat exchanger tube wall thickness may be expressed directly in millimeters or inches, or identified by Birmingham Wire Gauge (BWG).
Within the BWG system, a lower gauge number indicates a thicker wall.
| BWG | Reference wall thickness, inches | Metric conversion, mm |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | 0.109 | 2.769 |
| 14 | 0.083 | 2.108 |
| 16 | 0.065 | 1.651 |
| 18 | 0.049 | 1.245 |
| 20 | 0.035 | 0.889 |
| 22 | 0.028 | 0.711 |
Metric conversions are rounded to three decimal places. BWG identifies a reference thickness; the product specification and purchase order establish the applicable wall-thickness requirements. cw-estgroup.com
Always identify the gauge system. “16 gauge” is ambiguous because BWG, SWG and sheet-metal gauge systems do not necessarily represent the same thickness.
For procurement, a clear description is:
16 BWG, 0.065-inch wall, with the wall-thickness basis stated separately.
These descriptions have different acceptance implications:
ASTM A213 covers tubing ordered on a minimum-wall basis, with average-wall ordering available when specified. ASTM A249 describes nominal-wall welded tubing. Consequently, two quotations showing the same numerical thickness may represent different supply requirements. store.astm.org
An order requiring 1.65 mm minimum wall should not be treated as equivalent to 1.65 mm nominal wall without reviewing the governing requirements.
For an ideal round tube with a uniform wall:
ID = OD − 2 × Wall Thickness
For a metric tube specified as 19.05 mm OD × 1.65 mm wall:
ID = 19.05 − (2 × 1.65) = 15.75 mm
The following examples use the inch-based BWG reference thicknesses. ID is calculated before conversion to millimeters.
| Tube OD | BWG | Reference wall, inches | Calculated ID, mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3/4 inch / 19.05 mm | 18 | 0.049 | 16.561 |
| 3/4 inch / 19.05 mm | 16 | 0.065 | 15.748 |
| 3/4 inch / 19.05 mm | 14 | 0.083 | 14.834 |
| 1 inch / 25.40 mm | 18 | 0.049 | 22.911 |
| 1 inch / 25.40 mm | 16 | 0.065 | 22.098 |
| 1 inch / 25.40 mm | 14 | 0.083 | 21.184 |
These are calculated reference IDs, not guaranteed measured bore dimensions. Actual ID depends on OD and wall tolerances, wall distribution and any subsequent forming or expansion.
Where a minimum clear bore is critical for cleaning tools, inspection probes or process flow, include that requirement explicitly in the specification.
Heat exchanger tube length is determined by the equipment drawing and the agreed supply condition. There is no single length suitable for every exchanger.
The table below converts representative imperial drawing lengths.
| Specified length, feet | Equivalent length, mm | Equivalent length, meters |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 2,438.4 | 2.4384 |
| 10 | 3,048.0 | 3.0480 |
| 12 | 3,657.6 | 3.6576 |
| 16 | 4,876.8 | 4.8768 |
| 20 | 6,096.0 | 6.0960 |
| 24 | 7,315.2 | 7.3152 |
Metric orders may specify dimensions such as 3,000, 6,000 or 12,000 mm, subject to manufacturing and transport feasibility.
A 6-meter tube is 96 mm shorter than a 20-foot tube. These lengths should not be substituted without checking the drawing.
Maximum manufacturing length is also supplier-specific. Published mill capabilities include straight exchanger tubing considerably longer than routine cut lengths, so buyers should distinguish production capability from stock availability and shipment practicality. Alleima
For straight tubes, clarify whether the order requires:
Finished tube length and effective heat-transfer length may differ. Portions located within tubesheets or outside the active heat-transfer region must be accounted for in the equipment design.
Also specify the permitted length variation, end squareness and end preparation.
A U-bend tube cannot be fully defined by OD, wall thickness and one length value.
The drawing should identify:
Post-bend heat treatment and inspection should be specified according to the grade, fabrication requirements and project specification. Manufacturer guidance likewise treats bend radius, leg length and heat treatment as separate parameters. Alleima
For an ideal 180-degree U-bend with equal straight legs:
Developed centerline length = 2 × Straight leg length + π × Bend centerline radius
If each straight leg measures 3,000 mm from the tube end to the bend tangent, and the centerline radius is 100 mm:
Developed centerline length ≈ 6,314 mm
This geometric calculation excludes manufacturing and trimming allowances. The finished drawing and fabrication procedure determine the actual starting tube length.
Tube dimensions influence thermal performance, hydraulics and mechanical integrity together.
Outside diameter affects bundle geometry. Changing OD can require changes to tube count, pitch, tubesheet drilling and baffle holes. Replacement tubes should therefore be checked against the existing bundle drawing.
Inside diameter affects velocity. At a fixed volumetric flow rate per tube, reducing ID increases fluid velocity. The resulting pressure drop and erosion conditions must be evaluated for the actual fluid and operating regime.
Wall thickness affects both strength and heat conduction. Increasing wall thickness reduces ID at a fixed OD and increases conduction resistance through the tube wall. Its effect on overall heat-transfer performance depends on the fluid-side resistances and fouling conditions.
Length affects area and hydraulic resistance. Increasing active length increases external surface area, but also changes flow-path resistance and mechanical requirements. Fouling, erosion, vibration and thermal stresses remain relevant to exchanger performance. Alleima
For a plain straight tube, outside heat-transfer area is calculated as:
Aₒ = π × OD × Active Length
Using meters, a tube with 19.05 mm OD and 6.0 m active length has:
Aₒ ≈ 0.359 m²
This is a geometric area calculation. Heat duty additionally depends on the overall heat-transfer coefficient, temperature driving force and exchanger arrangement.
Wall selection must also consider the design pressure differential, temperature, material properties, corrosion or erosion allowance, manufacturing tolerances and forming effects. Conditions involving external pressure or vacuum require the relevant stability checks.
The product standard should match the material family, manufacturing route and project requirements.
| Standard | Principal relevance |
|---|---|
| ASTM A213/A213M | Seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel tubing for boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger service |
| ASTM A249/A249M | Welded austenitic tubing for boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger and condenser service |
| ASTM A789/A789M | Seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic, or duplex, stainless steel tubing |
| ASTM A1016/A1016M | General requirements used with applicable ASTM tube product specifications |
| EN 10216-5 | Technical delivery conditions for seamless stainless steel pressure tubes |
| EN 10217-7 | Technical delivery conditions for welded stainless steel pressure tubes |
The ASTM and EN publications distinguish these product scopes and manufacturing routes. store.astm.org
For ASME equipment, confirm the required SA material specification and Code edition with the exchanger fabricator.
TEMA requirements address exchanger design and construction matters; the purchase specification must still identify the tube material and product standard. TEMA
A matching grade and OD alone do not establish interchangeability between tubes supplied to different standards.
A dimensional value must be accompanied by an acceptance requirement. Avoid applying one blanket tolerance to every stainless steel heat exchanger tube.
ASTM A1016 provides general requirements for several relevant tube specifications. The individual product specification takes precedence where requirements conflict, while more stringent purchase-order requirements can also govern acceptance. store.astm.org
Before ordering, confirm:
| Inspection item | Requirement to clarify |
|---|---|
| OD and ovality | Applicable limits, measurement locations and tubesheet-fit requirements |
| Wall thickness | Minimum or average/nominal basis, permitted variation and measurement method |
| Length | Finished length, tolerance and any cutting allowance |
| Straightness | Requirements for assembly through tubesheets and supports |
| Tube ends | Squareness, deburring, cleanliness and specified preparation |
| U-bend geometry | Radius, leg spacing, alignment and post-bend dimensional limits |
The inspection plan should also identify material traceability, required mechanical tests, and the applicable hydrostatic or nondestructive examination requirements. Additional PMI, ultrasonic examination or other project tests should be agreed explicitly.
Where an EN 10204 Type 3.1 inspection certificate is required, include it in the order together with any separate dimensional or test reports.
A useful enquiry allows suppliers to quote the same technical requirement.
Include:
For replacement work, attach the original tube specification and bundle drawing where available. If the project involves changing dimensions or material, provide the relevant service conditions for engineering review.
Example RFQ description:

Dimensional tolerances, delivery condition and testing to the specified standard edition and attached project requirements. EN 10204 Type 3.1 inspection certificate required. Supplier to confirm manufacturing feasibility, packing dimensions and delivery schedule.
The example uses a directly specified metric wall thickness. If the project instead requires 16 BWG, identify the governing inch dimension and ordering basis clearly.
Frequently encountered examples include 3/4-inch OD and 1-inch OD, equivalent to 19.05 and 25.40 mm. Other diameters are selected according to the exchanger geometry, thermal design, cleaning requirements and manufacturing availability.
No. The BWG reference thickness is 0.065 inch, equivalent to 1.651 mm. A directly specified 1.6 mm wall is a different dimension.
No. Twenty feet equals 6,096 mm. A 6,000 mm tube is 96 mm shorter.
No. BWG identifies wall thickness. Allowable pressure depends on the material, dimensions, temperature, manufacturing requirements, condition and governing design rules.
The change requires engineering review. A thicker wall changes the internal flow area and may affect heat transfer, pressure drop and tube-to-tubesheet joint fabrication.
It is a useful starting point, but tools may require a verified minimum bore. Manufacturing tolerances, bends, weld profiles and expanded ends can affect the actual passage.
Provide a drawing defining leg length, bend centerline radius and overall geometry. A single “tube length” value can be interpreted differently by the buyer and manufacturer.
Only after the equipment specification and applicable requirements have been reviewed. Grade and dimensional similarity do not demonstrate equivalent heat treatment, testing, tolerances or acceptance requirements.
