Heat Number Tracking Strengthens Stainless Steel Export Order Control

Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. uses order-linked heat-number tracking for stainless steel export supply. A heat number connects the physical material to the producing heat and to the chemical and mechanical results recorded by the certificate issuer. That link becomes more difficult to maintain when one plate is cut into many blanks, one coil is slit into several widths or a mixed shipment contains multiple grades and heats. Shangyou records the heat number during receiving and allocation, carries it into the work order and inspection record, and connects the finished pieces or packages to the packing list before document release.

At receiving, physical marks are compared with the MTC and stock record. When material is divided, the original identity is transferred by the method agreed for the product and surface: protected tags, bundle labels, stencil marking, low-stress marking or another controlled method. Inspection results are stored against the relevant order line or package. Before release, the team compares the MTC, material marks, inspection record, packing list and package labels for consistency. Where individual-piece traceability is required, it must be defined before cutting so the marking method and labor are included in the route.

Traceability records support document continuity but do not change the identity of the original certificate issuer. The mill MTC, Shangyou's incoming or final inspection records and an independent third-party report are separate documents with different purposes. Buyers should state the required EN 10204 document type, whether original mill certificates are mandatory, whether certificate transfer is acceptable and where the heat number must appear. Project specifications may require piece-level marking, bundle-level marking or package-level traceability. Defining this at inquiry stage prevents re-marking, document mismatch and delays after processing.
