What Is 201 Stainless Steel Coil?

201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel identified as UNS S20100. Manganese and nitrogen replace part of the nickel normally used in conventional chromium-nickel austenitic grades.

This alloy design gives Type 201:

  • Higher strength than many annealed conventional austenitic grades
  • Strong work-hardening behavior during forming
  • Good ductility for suitable forming operations
  • A bright and attractive finished surface
  • Lower dependence on nickel content
  • Practical performance in mild indoor environments

ASTM A240/A240M covers chromium, chromium-nickel and chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for pressure-vessel and general applications. The ordered material must comply with the chemical and mechanical requirements of the applicable standard edition.

Type 201 is commonly classified as a low-nickel Cr-Mn austenitic stainless steel. Official producer data identifies it as ASTM Type 201, UNS S20100 and EN 1.4372.

Why B2B Buyers Choose Type 201 Stainless Steel
1. Higher Strength in Thin-Gauge Components

The nitrogen and manganese alloying system provides relatively high strength. This can help buyers reduce component thickness in selected applications, provided forming, stiffness, corrosion and fabrication requirements are properly evaluated.

2. Cost-Effective Alloy Design

Type 201 contains less nickel than Type 304. It may offer a more economical solution for high-volume products used in mild indoor or controlled environments.

The decision should be based on the full service environment rather than material price alone.

3. Attractive Decorative Surface

Cold rolled 201 stainless steel coil can be supplied with 2B, BA, brushed, hairline and polished finishes for visible appliance, furniture, elevator and architectural components.

4. Good Work-Hardening Capability

Type 201 develops strength quickly during cold forming. This is useful for formed parts but also means that forming force, tooling, springback and intermediate processing must be evaluated carefully.

5. Flexible Coil Processing

Coils can be slit into narrow strips, cut into sheets or blanks, polished and protected with PVC or PE film according to the customer’s production line.

Important Material Selection Boundary

Type 201 should not automatically be marketed or selected as a direct substitute for Type 304.

Although both are austenitic stainless steels, Type 201 generally has lower corrosion resistance than standard chromium-nickel austenitic grades. Its lower nickel content and strong work-hardening behavior can also affect fabrication, machining and welding.

Industry technical guidance describes Cr-Mn austenitic grades as having higher strength but lower resistance to pitting and stress-corrosion cracking than standard Cr-Ni grades, particularly in demanding chloride conditions.

Type 201 Is Generally Better Suited To
  • Dry indoor environments
  • Decorative trim and interior panels
  • Household appliance components
  • Kitchen utensils for controlled service
  • Furniture and shelving
  • Window and door components
  • General fabricated products
  • Transportation interior components
  • Applications where strength and appearance are more critical than severe corrosion resistance
Evaluate Type 304 or 316 Instead For
  • Coastal or marine exposure
  • Continuous outdoor wet environments
  • High-chloride water
  • Aggressive cleaning chemicals
  • Chemical processing equipment
  • Pharmaceutical process equipment
  • Highly hygienic food-production systems
  • Acidic or alkaline process media
  • Swimming-pool environments
  • Applications where corrosion failure creates a safety risk

For uncertain applications, send the service temperature, chemical concentration, chloride level, cleaning method and expected service life for technical review.

201 Stainless Steel Chemical Composition

The following values represent common ASTM Type 201 composition limits. Final acceptance must be based on the ordered standard edition and the actual mill test certificate.

Element ASTM Type 201 / UNS S20100
Carbon, C ≤ 0.15%
Manganese, Mn 5.50–7.50%
Silicon, Si ≤ 1.00%

Sulfur, S ≤ 0.030%
Chromium, Cr 16.00–18.00%
Nickel, Ni 3.50–5.50%
Nitrogen, N ≤ 0.25%
Iron, Fe Balance

As a producer reference, Aperam lists typical Type 201 values of approximately 0.09% carbon, 6.5% manganese, 16.3% chromium and 4.15% nickel. Typical heat chemistry is not a substitute for the contractual specification or MTC.

Forming and Fabrication

Type 201 can be formed by bending, profiling, drawing, roll forming and stamping. However, it work-hardens more rapidly than Type 304 and may require:

  • Higher forming forces
  • Stronger tooling
  • Larger press capacity
  • Proper lubrication
  • Springback compensation
  • Controlled forming speed
  • Intermediate annealing for severe forming
  • Careful edge preparation

High work hardening should be considered during both forming and machining. Improper tooling or excessive deformation may lead to edge cracking, dimensional instability or rapid tool wear.

Outokumpu describes Type 201 as having a high work-hardening coefficient and increased strength during mechanical deformation.

Welding Considerations

Type 201 can be welded using common stainless steel processes, subject to joint design, thickness and service conditions.

Applicable processes may include:

  • TIG/GTAW
  • MIG/GMAW
  • Resistance spot welding
  • Seam welding
  • Laser welding
  • Plasma welding

Important procurement and fabrication points include:

  • Confirm the filler metal with the welding engineer
  • Avoid carbon-steel contamination
  • Control heat input and distortion
  • Remove heat tint where corrosion performance matters
  • Clean and passivate the weld area when required
  • Evaluate corrosion performance after welding
  • Qualify the welding procedure for critical components

For welded products used in wet, chloride-containing or aggressive environments, Type 304L, 316L or another corrosion-resistant grade may be more appropriate.

Corrosion Resistance

Type 201 provides useful corrosion resistance in mild atmospheric and indoor environments. However, it normally offers lower corrosion resistance than Type 304 because of its alloy balance.

Its suitability depends on:

  • Chloride concentration
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Surface finish
  • Cleaning frequency
  • Surface contamination
  • Crevices and deposits
  • Welding condition
  • Contact with dissimilar metals
  • Expected service life

Type 201 should not be specified only because the surface initially looks similar to Type 304.

For corrosion-sensitive projects, the customer should provide the full service environment before material approval.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 201 stainless steel the same as 304 stainless steel?

No. Type 201 uses more manganese and less nickel than Type 304. It generally has higher strength and stronger work hardening, but lower corrosion resistance in demanding environments.

Can 201 stainless steel coil be used outdoors?

It may be suitable for sheltered or mild environments, but it is not normally the first choice for continuous outdoor moisture, coastal locations or chloride exposure. The complete service environment should be reviewed.

Does 201 stainless steel rust?

Type 201 is stainless steel, but it is not corrosion-proof. Rust staining or pitting can occur when it is exposed to chlorides, contamination, standing water, aggressive cleaning chemicals or unsuitable service conditions.

Is Type 201 magnetic?

Annealed Type 201 is generally low in magnetism, but cold working can transform part of its microstructure and make it noticeably magnetic. Magnet testing alone cannot reliably identify the grade.

What is the difference between 2B and BA finish?

2B has a smooth, moderately reflective surface produced by cold rolling, annealing, pickling and light skin passing. BA is bright annealed under a controlled atmosphere and normally has greater reflectivity.

Can you supply narrow 201 stainless steel strip?

Yes. Wide coils can be slit into narrow strips according to the required width, tolerance, edge condition, coil ID and maximum coil weight.

Can Type 201 be deep drawn?

It can be formed and drawn, but its rapid work hardening requires adequate press capacity, suitable lubrication, tooling control and springback compensation. Severe deep-drawing applications should be evaluated through samples or production trials.

Can 201 stainless steel be welded?

Yes, using appropriate stainless steel welding procedures. Filler selection, heat input, cleaning, heat-tint removal and service environment must be considered.

Do you provide an MTC?

An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate can be supplied when included in the order requirements.

How should I compare quotations from different suppliers?

Compare the exact grade, standard, thickness tolerance, actual width, surface finish, coil weight, edge condition, MTC, net weight, packing and delivery terms. A low price may reflect different tolerances, mixed grades, secondary material or incomplete documentation.
