ASTM A376 was originally developed for piping in central stations of electric-power generating thermal plants. TP316H is a modification of standard TP316 grade with controlled higher carbon content (0.04-0.10% vs 0.08% maximum for TP316), specifically intended for service at temperatures where creep and stress rupture properties are critical. The molybdenum addition (2-3%) provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments compared to TP304H. At 700°C, TP316H offers approximately 33% higher creep rupture strength than standard TP316. All pipe is furnished in the solution annealed condition with minimum solution treatment temperature of 1900°F [1040°C] and grain size of Grade 7 or coarser.

Temperature and Creep Requirements: TP316H is designed for service above approximately 500-550°C where creep strength is critical. At 700°C, 1000h creep rupture strength is ≥80MPa, approximately 33% higher than standard TP316.
Corrosion Environment: The 2-3% molybdenum content provides significantly better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments compared to non-molybdenum grades. For general corrosive service without high temperature requirements, consider TP316L for as-welded applications.
Post-Weld Heat Treatment: TP316H is more prone to intergranular corrosion after welding than 316L. Post-weld annealing is often required to restore corrosion resistance, and welding should use lower heat input to avoid grain coarsening.
Grain Size: ASTM A376 requires TP316H to have a grain size of Grade 7 or coarser, which contributes to improved high-temperature stability and creep resistance.
ASTM A376 TP316H seamless pipes are packed with export-standard protection including plastic wrapping, edge protection, steel strapping and wooden cases or steel frames. Packaging can be adjusted according to pipe size, weight and shipping requirements.
Quality documents may include MTC 3.1, inspection reports, packing lists and other agreed certificates. PMI/OES (XRF) can identify Cr, Ni, Mo, but cannot independently confirm L/H carbon level differences—refer to MTC for complete verification.
