Product Description
ASTM A376 TP316H Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe

Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. supplies ASTM A376 TP316H stainless steel seamless pipe for global distributors, EPC contractors, power plant engineers and project procurement teams. Manufactured to ASTM A376/A376M standards, TP316H seamless pipe delivers enhanced creep resistance, oxidation resistance and long-term structural integrity for power generation, boiler systems, superheaters and heat exchangers.

ASTM A376 was originally developed for piping in central stations of electric-power generating thermal plants. TP316H is a modification of standard TP316 grade with controlled higher carbon content (0.04-0.10% vs 0.08% maximum for TP316), specifically intended for service at temperatures where creep and stress rupture properties are critical. The molybdenum addition (2-3%) provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments compared to TP304H. At 700°C, TP316H offers approximately 33% higher creep rupture strength than standard TP316. All pipe is furnished in the solution annealed condition with minimum solution treatment temperature of 1900°F [1040°C] and grain size of Grade 7 or coarser.

Applications and Selection Guide

ASTM A376 TP316H seamless pipe is specified for high temperature service conditions requiring both creep strength and chloride corrosion resistance.

Typical applications include:

  • Electric power generating thermal plants (boiler piping, superheaters, reheaters)
  • High temperature heat exchangers and condensers
  • Petrochemical and refinery furnace piping
  • High temperature process piping
  • Power generation components (600-870°C service range)

When selecting TP316H seamless pipe, buyers should consider:

Temperature and Creep Requirements: TP316H is designed for service above approximately 500-550°C where creep strength is critical. At 700°C, 1000h creep rupture strength is ≥80MPa, approximately 33% higher than standard TP316.

Corrosion Environment: The 2-3% molybdenum content provides significantly better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments compared to non-molybdenum grades. For general corrosive service without high temperature requirements, consider TP316L for as-welded applications.

Post-Weld Heat Treatment: TP316H is more prone to intergranular corrosion after welding than 316L. Post-weld annealing is often required to restore corrosion resistance, and welding should use lower heat input to avoid grain coarsening.

Grain Size: ASTM A376 requires TP316H to have a grain size of Grade 7 or coarser, which contributes to improved high-temperature stability and creep resistance.

Packaging, Payment and After-Sales

ASTM A376 TP316H seamless pipes are packed with export-standard protection including plastic wrapping, edge protection, steel strapping and wooden cases or steel frames. Packaging can be adjusted according to pipe size, weight and shipping requirements.

Quality documents may include MTC 3.1, inspection reports, packing lists and other agreed certificates. PMI/OES (XRF) can identify Cr, Ni, Mo, but cannot independently confirm L/H carbon level differences—refer to MTC for complete verification.

For quality evaluation, customers should provide heat number, package identification, inspection records and product photos. Technical solutions will be provided according to specifications and contract requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is ASTM A376 TP316H?
ASTM A376 TP316H is a seamless austenitic stainless steel pipe with controlled higher carbon content (0.04-0.10%) and molybdenum addition, specifically intended for high temperature service where creep and stress rupture properties are critical.
2. What is the difference between TP316 and TP316H?
TP316H has higher carbon content (0.04-0.10% vs 0.08% max for TP316), providing improved creep and stress rupture strength at elevated temperatures. TP316H also requires a grain size of Grade 7 or coarser.
3. What is the difference between TP316H and TP304H?
TP316H contains 2-3% molybdenum, providing superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride environments compared to TP304H. TP316H is preferred for applications where both high temperature and chloride exposure are concerns.
4. What is the maximum service temperature for TP316H?
TP316H is typically designed for service from 600°C to 870°C for long-term creep applications. Below 600°C, standard TP316 or TP316L may be more cost-effective.
5. Is heat treatment required for TP316H pipe?
Yes. All pipe must be furnished in the solution annealed condition with minimum solution treatment temperature of 1900°F [1040°C], unless the order specifically states otherwise.
6. What is the grain size requirement for TP316H?
ASTM A376 requires TP316H to have a grain size of Grade 7 or coarser, as determined in accordance with Test Method E112.
7. Can TP316H be welded?
Yes. TP316H is weldable using standard fusion welding methods, but post-weld annealing is often required and low heat input should be used to avoid grain coarsening and intergranular corrosion.
8. What are the mechanical properties of TP316H?
Minimum tensile strength is 515 MPa, minimum yield strength is 205 MPa, and minimum elongation is 35%.
9. What is the creep strength of TP316H?
At 700°C, TP316H provides approximately ≥80 MPa at 0.2% creep strain for 1,000 hours—about 33% higher than standard TP316.
10. What documents are provided with delivery?
Typical documents include MTC 3.1, inspection reports, packing list, and heat number traceability for all material supplied.
