253MA (UNS S30815, EN 1.4835) is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloyed with nitrogen and rare earth metals (primarily cerium Ce). Despite its lean nickel content, it offers an outstanding combination of creep strength and high resistance to oxidation, sulphidation and erosion/abrasion at extremely high temperatures, making it more economical than most heat resistant alloys. The rare earth metals (Ce) combine with silicon to provide superior oxidation resistance up to 1150°C, while nitrogen and carbon contribute to creep rupture strength comparable to some nickel-based alloys. This grade can replace more expensive 310/310S (25Cr-20Ni) and certain nickel alloys in high temperature service.
