Product Description
ASTM A312 254 SMO Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe

Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. supplies ASTM A312 254 SMO stainless steel seamless pipe for global distributors, EPC contractors, fabricators and project procurement teams. Manufactured to ASTM A312/A312M standards, 254 SMO seamless pipe delivers exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in seawater and aggressive chloride-bearing media.

254 SMO (UNS S31254, EN 1.4547) is a high-alloy super-austenitic stainless steel developed specifically for seawater and other aggressive chloride environments. The high molybdenum (6%), chromium (20%), nickel (18%) and nitrogen (0.2%) content provides a PREN value of ≥42.5, significantly higher than 316L. The steel offers twice the strength of conventional 300-series stainless steels, making it a cost-effective substitute for high-nickel alloys and titanium in many applications. UNS S31254 seamless pipe has been approved by ASME for use according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Division 1.

Applications and Selection Guide

ASTM A312 254 SMO seamless pipe is specified for severe chloride and seawater environments where 316L is inadequate.

Typical applications include:

  • Seawater piping systems and marine equipment
  • Offshore oil and gas platform piping
  • Pulp and paper bleaching equipment
  • Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) systems
  • Chemical processing with aggressive chlorides
  • Desalination plant piping
  • Food processing equipment
  • Hydraulic and instrumentation tubing

When selecting 254 SMO seamless pipe, buyers should consider:

Corrosion Environment: 254 SMO provides excellent resistance in environments containing chlorides, sulfuric acid (more resistant than TP316), seawater and many organic acids. For extreme environments with high chlorides and elevated temperatures, 254 SMO is often more cost-effective than nickel alloys or titanium.

Strength and Design: With twice the yield strength of 316L (≥310 MPa vs ~170 MPa), 254 SMO allows for thinner wall sections and reduced weight, providing lifecycle cost advantages.

Weldability: 254 SMO demonstrates good weldability with standard fusion welding methods. For welded assemblies, low carbon content provides resistance to sensitization.

Temperature Range: Operating temperatures typically range from -196°C to 538°C (suggested operating condition).

Packaging, Payment and After-Sales

ASTM A312 254 SMO seamless pipes are packed with export-standard protection including plastic wrapping, edge protection, steel strapping and wooden cases or steel frames. Packaging can be adjusted according to pipe size, weight and shipping requirements.

Quality documents may include MTC 3.1, inspection reports, packing lists and other agreed certificates. PMI/OES (XRF) can identify Cr, Ni, Mo content, but refer to MTC for complete certification.

For quality evaluation, customers should provide heat number, package identification, inspection records and product photos. Technical solutions will be provided according to specifications and contract requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is ASTM A312 254 SMO?

ASTM A312 254 SMO (UNS S31254, EN 1.4547) is a high-alloy super-austenitic stainless steel seamless pipe with 6% molybdenum content, developed for seawater and aggressive chloride-bearing media.

2. What is the PREN of 254 SMO?

254 SMO has a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of ≥42.5, significantly higher than 316L (24-26), indicating exceptional pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.

3. What is the difference between 254 SMO and 316L?

254 SMO contains higher Cr (20% vs 16-18%), Mo (6% vs 2-3%), Ni (18% vs 10-14%) and N (0.2% vs 0.08 max). It provides PREN≥42.5 vs 24-26 and double the yield strength of 316L.

4. Is 254 SMO suitable for seawater applications?

Yes. 254 SMO was specifically developed for seawater and other aggressive chloride-bearing media. UNS S31254 seamless pipe has ASME approval for pressure vessel use.

5. What standards cover 254 SMO pipe?

ASTM A312, ASTM A269, ASTM A213 and EN 10216-5 cover seamless pipe. ASTM A312/ASME SA312 is the primary standard.

6. Can 254 SMO replace nickel alloys?

Yes. In many applications, 254 SMO is a cost-effective substitute for high-nickel alloys (like Alloy C-276) and titanium where extreme conditions allow.

7. What are the mechanical properties of 254 SMO?

Minimum tensile strength 650-850 MPa, yield strength ≥310 MPa, elongation ≥35%, hardness ≤96 HRB.

8. What is the maximum service temperature?

Suggested operating temperature range is -196°C to 538°C.

9. What documents are provided with delivery?

Typical documents include MTC 3.1, inspection reports, packing list, and heat number traceability for all material supplied.
