Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. supplies ASTM A790 S32101 lean duplex stainless steel seamless pipe for global distributors, EPC contractors, fabricators and project procurement teams. Manufactured to ASTM A790/A790M and ASME SA790 standards, S32101 seamless pipe delivers high strength, good corrosion resistance and significant cost advantages for general-purpose industrial applications.
S32101 (UNS S32101, EN 1.4162, LDX 2101) is a lean duplex stainless steel developed by Outokumpu as a cost-effective alternative to conventional 300-series austenitic grades. The grade contains approximately 21-22% chromium, 4-6% manganese, and only 1.35-1.70% nickel—significantly lower than 304/316L—with the phase balance achieved through manganese and nitrogen additions rather than high nickel content. The result is a material with approximately 2.3 times the yield strength of 304, corrosion resistance comparable to 316L, and a more stable, cost-predictable pricing structure.
The ASTM A790 specification covers seamless ferritic/austenitic pipe for general corrosive service with particular emphasis on stress corrosion cracking resistance. All pipe undergoes mandatory solution annealing at 1870-1970°F [1020-1080°C] followed by water quenching to achieve optimal phase balance and avoid intermetallic phases.

ASTM A790 S32101 lean duplex seamless pipe is specified for general-purpose applications where the strength and chloride resistance of duplex are desirable, but the high alloy content of standard duplex (2205) is unnecessary.
Typical applications include:
When selecting S32101 seamless pipe, buyers should consider:
Corrosive Environment: S32101 offers corrosion resistance superior to 304L and comparable to 316L in most environments, with PREN~27 providing strong pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. Key exceptions include certain sulfuric acid concentrations where 316L outperforms.
Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking: Like all duplex grades, S32101 provides excellent resistance to chloride-induced SCC—far superior to 304/316L. Practical application is recommended for under-insulation piping up to 275°C (550°F).
Temperature Limitations: Maximum recommended service temperature is approximately 150°C (302°F) for continuous exposure. Extended exposure above 300°C causes substantial toughness reduction from intermetallic precipitation.
Strength and Weight Savings: With 450-530 MPa yield strength (more than double that of 304L at 205 MPa), S32101 allows for significantly thinner sections—reducing material weight and overall costs.
Cost Advantage: Low nickel content (1.35-1.70% vs 8-10% in 304) provides price stability and cost savings compared to conventional austenitic grades. S32101 can directly substitute 304/304L and often 316L with appropriate redesign.
ASTM A790 S32101 lean duplex seamless pipes are packed with export-standard protection including plastic wrapping, edge protection, steel strapping and wooden cases or steel frames. Packaging can be adjusted according to pipe size, weight and shipping requirements.
Quality documents may include MTC 3.1, inspection reports, packing lists and other agreed certificates. PMI/OES (XRF) can identify Cr, Ni, Mo, but refer to MTC for complete verification.
For quality evaluation, customers should provide heat number, package identification, inspection records and product photos. Technical solutions will be provided according to specifications and contract requirements.
