Product Description
ASTM A240 316Ti Stainless Steel Plate UNS S31635 with Titanium Stabilization and Elevated Temperature Strength

Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. supplies ASTM A240 316Ti stainless steel plate for global distributors, fabricators, equipment manufacturers, and EPC contractors requiring a molybdenum-bearing grade with enhanced high temperature performance. Produced to ASTM A240/A240M as UNS S31635 (also equivalent to EN 1.4571, DIN X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2, and JIS SUS 316Ti), this titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel combines the superior corrosion resistance of 316 with improved elevated temperature strength and resistance to intergranular corrosion.

The defining characteristic of 316Ti is its titanium addition (typically 5 × carbon content minimum, up to 0.70% max) which stabilizes the alloy against chromium carbide precipitation. When 316 stainless steel is exposed to temperatures in the 900-1500°F (425-815°C) range during welding or service, carbon combines with chromium to form chromium carbides at grain boundaries, depleting local chromium and causing sensitization. In 316Ti, titanium preferentially bonds with carbon to form stable titanium carbides, significantly reducing susceptibility to sensitization and preserving corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures. The alloy also offers higher creep, stress-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures compared to 304/304L grades.

Applications and Material Selection Guide

ASTM A240 316Ti stainless steel plate is specified for applications requiring the corrosion resistance of 316 with added stabilization for elevated temperature exposure.

Typical applications include:

  • Chemical processing and petrochemical equipment
  • Pressure vessels and heat exchangers
  • High temperature industrial and electrical equipment
  • Shipbuilding and marine components
  • Pulp, paper, and textile machinery
  • Pharmaceutical and food processing equipment
  • Bolts, nuts, springs, and fasteners in elevated temperature service
  • Power generation and boiler components

Key selection considerations: 316Ti offers higher creep, stress-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures compared to 304/304L grades. The titanium stabilization provides improved resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or prolonged thermal exposure in the 425-815°C range. In low temperature seawater, the alloy offers limited resistance to pitting but is susceptible to crevice attack. The alloy is non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Continuous use at temperatures above 800°C is not recommended due to reduced creep strength. For maximum corrosion resistance where stabilization is not required, 316L remains a cost-effective alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between 316Ti and 316L stainless steel?

Both grades are low-carbon versions of 316, but 316Ti is stabilized with titanium to provide enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion at elevated temperatures. 316L achieves its stabilization through extremely low carbon content. 316Ti offers better high temperature strength and creep resistance.

2. Why is titanium added to 316Ti?

Titanium (minimum 5 × carbon content) is added to stabilize the alloy against chromium carbide precipitation at elevated temperatures (425-815°C). The titanium reacts with carbon to form titanium carbides, preventing chromium depletion and preserving corrosion resistance.

3. What is the equivalent EN designation for 316Ti?

EN 1.4571 (X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2) is the European equivalent for UNS S31635 / 316Ti.

4. What is the maximum service temperature for 316Ti?

316Ti is suitable for operating temperatures up to approximately 300°C in continuous service. The alloy offers improved creep and stress-rupture properties at elevated temperatures, superior to 304/304L grades.

5. What thickness ranges are available for 316Ti plate?

Cold rolled sheet from 0.3mm to 3.0mm; hot rolled plate from 3.0mm to 100mm+. Heavier thicknesses available on request.

6. Is 316Ti stainless steel magnetic?

316Ti is fully austenitic and non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Cold working may induce slight magnetism.

7. What documents are provided with delivery?

MTC 3.1, inspection reports, packing list, and heat number traceability.

8. Is third-party inspection available?

Yes, SGS, TUV, or BV upon request.

9. Can 316Ti be welded?

Yes. 316Ti offers excellent weldability. The titanium stabilization eliminates sensitization in the heat-affected zone, allowing welding without post-weld annealing.

10. What are typical applications for 316Ti?

Chemical processing equipment, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, petrochemical plant components, shipbuilding, pulp and paper machinery, and fasteners in elevated temperature service.
