Grade 304 offers balanced corrosion resistance, fabrication performance and availability for general-purpose structures. Grade 316L contains molybdenum and is commonly considered where improved resistance to chloride-bearing or chemical environments is needed. Final grade selection must consider temperature, concentration, deposits and crevice conditions rather than relying only on the grade name.
PMI can confirm major alloying elements and distinguish 304 from 316-type alloys. However, handheld XRF cannot independently verify the low carbon content required for the “L” designation. Grade confirmation should therefore remain linked to the original heat number and material certificate.
Applications include machinery frames, processing platforms, food equipment, marine supports, chemical-plant structures, brackets and welded assemblies.
Each order should identify the ASTM unit system, grade, condition, size, length and supplementary requirements. Mixing nominal inch dimensions with metric tolerance requirements should be avoided unless clearly agreed.
| Buyer Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does ASTM A276 cover stainless steel angles? | Yes, for covered hot-rolled or extruded shapes. |
| Are 304 and 316L both available? | Yes. |
| Does PMI prove the material is 316L? | It verifies major alloy content but not low carbon by itself. |
| Can MTC 3.1 be provided? | Yes. |
| Can unequal angles be ordered? | Yes. |
| Are custom lengths available? | Yes. |
| Can third-party inspection be arranged? | Yes. |
| What dimensions should be stated? | A × B × T × L. |
| Can pieces retain heat-number traceability after cutting? | Yes, when marking transfer is specified. |
| Can polished surfaces be supplied? | Yes, subject to finish requirements. |
