Product Description
 Stainless Steel Bar and Rod

Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. supplies stainless steel bar and rod for global B2B buyers, machining companies, distributors, equipment manufacturers and project contractors. The range includes round, square, hexagonal and flat products in austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, precipitation-hardening and duplex grades. Instead of treating every bar as interchangeable, we match the grade, product standard, manufacturing condition, dimensional tolerance and inspection package to the final component.

Product Description and Purchasing Logic

Round bar is the main choice for shafts, pins, valve stems and turned parts. Hex bar supports fastener, fitting and automatic-machining production. Square and flat bar are used in frames, fixtures, structural fabrications and machined blocks. For high-volume machining, cold-drawn or bright bar can reduce stock removal. Large diameters and critical sections may require peeled, turned, forged or ultrasonic-tested material rather than ordinary hot-rolled stock.

The purchase order should state the required grade, UNS or EN number, applicable product standard, shape, dimensions, length, supply condition, surface, tolerance, straightness and heat treatment. ASTM A276 covers common hot- and cold-finished stainless bars, while ASTM A582 is more appropriate for free-machining grades such as 303. ASTM A564 applies to age-hardening bar such as 17-4PH, and ASTM A479 should only be specified when the material is intended for boiler or pressure-vessel construction.

Processing and Machining Guidance

Bars can be band-saw or cold-saw cut to fixed lengths, end-faced, chamfered, drilled, turned or centerless ground. Austenitic grades work-harden quickly, so machining should use rigid tooling, positive cutting geometry, sufficient feed and continuous coolant. Duplex grades require stable setups and controlled heat input. Martensitic and precipitation-hardening grades must be ordered in the correct annealed, solution-treated or aged condition before final machining and heat treatment.

Material Selection Boundaries

Grade selection must be based on the service environment rather than a generic claim of “excellent corrosion resistance.” 303 improves machinability but has reduced pitting resistance and is not preferred for welding or marine exposure. 304 is a general-purpose grade but is not a universal chloride-service material. 316L offers better pitting resistance than 304, while 2205 and 2507 provide higher strength and better chloride stress-corrosion resistance when correctly solution annealed. Final suitability depends on temperature, chloride level, pH, stress, crevices and fabrication history.

Values are representative engineering references for common conditions. The applicable ASTM/EN standard, section size, ordered condition and MTC control acceptance. Grade 303 is frequently hardness-controlled under ASTM A582, so tensile values should not be assumed without the certified heat data.

FAQ
  1. What is the difference between stainless steel bar and rod?

In industrial purchasing, bar normally refers to straight solid products with controlled cross-sections. Rod may refer to smaller straight bar or coiled rod depending on the market. The drawing, size, condition and standard should be stated to avoid ambiguity.

  2. Which shapes are available?

Round, square, hexagonal and flat bars are the main forms. Forged round bar and custom-machined blanks can also be supplied subject to grade, size and MOQ.

  3. Which standard should I specify?

Use ASTM A276 for general stainless bars, ASTM A582 for free-machining grades, ASTM A564 for age-hardening bars and ASTM A479 only for boiler or pressure-vessel applications. EN 10088-3 is common for European orders.

  4. Can bars be supplied with MTC 3.1?

Yes. EN 10204 3.1 material certificates can include heat number, chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat-treatment details. Additional reports should be stated in the order.

  5. Can you provide PMI testing?

PMI can be arranged for grade verification. XRF is useful for alloy identification but cannot independently confirm low-carbon L grades or all light elements; OES or laboratory chemistry may be required.

  6. What finishes are available?

Typical conditions include hot rolled, annealed and pickled, cold drawn, bright, peeled, turned, polished and centerless ground.

  7. Can you cut bars to exact length?

Yes. Band-saw and cold-saw cutting are available. Length tolerance, squareness, burr condition and machining allowance must be agreed before production.

  8. How should I select 304 or 316L?

304 suits many general indoor and mildly corrosive applications. 316L adds molybdenum for improved pitting resistance, but actual suitability still depends on chloride concentration, temperature and crevice conditions.

  9. Are all grades held in stock?

No. Common 304 and 316L sizes may be stocked, while duplex, super duplex, high-temperature and precipitation-hardening grades are often regular production or made to order.

  10. What information is required for a quotation?

Provide grade, standard, shape, dimensions, length, quantity, surface, tolerance, heat-treatment condition, testing requirements, end use and destination port.
