Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. supplies ASTM A313 304 stainless steel spring wire for spring manufacturers, hardware producers and precision component programs. The product is supplied as cold-drawn spring wire with diameter-specific mechanical requirements and controlled coil or spool configuration. 304 provides a practical balance of corrosion resistance, availability and cold-worked spring strength for many general industrial environments.

This product page is positioned under ASTM A313/A313M. The standard role must match the actual product function. General wire, spring wire, cold-heading wire, weaving wire and rope wire are not interchangeable standard categories. When a customer drawing introduces tighter diameter, tensile, surface, coil or spool requirements, those project requirements should be added to the purchase specification.
Reference chemistry for 304 / UNS S30400 is shown for grade identification. Contract chemistry and permitted variation must follow the ordered specification and MTC.
| Element | wt.% | Element | wt.% |
|---|---|---|---|
| C | ≤0.08 | Cr | 18.0-20.0 |
| Ni | 8.0-10.5 | Mn | ≤2.00 |
| Si | ≤1.00 | P | ≤0.045 |
| S | ≤0.030 | N | ≤0.10 |
Do not apply one tensile value across all 304 spring-wire diameters. ASTM A313 mechanical acceptance must be matched to the ordered diameter and condition.
| Parameter | Procurement Rule |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | Confirm by grade + diameter + delivery condition + governing standard. Do not use one grade-wide value. |
| Elongation / Ductility | Condition and diameter dependent; specify when forming or spring performance requires it. |
| Hardness | Not always the controlling wire acceptance parameter; use only when required by the standard or drawing. |
| Diameter Tolerance | Specify numeric tolerance; tighter tolerances require route and inspection confirmation. |
| Magnetic Response | Austenitic grades can become more magnetic after cold work; precipitation-hardening grades depend on condition. |
304 spring wire is a general-purpose choice, but cold work can increase magnetic response. It should not be promoted as universally suitable for seawater or high-chloride chemical service. Where corrosion exposure is more aggressive, 316 spring wire may be evaluated. Where very high strength or heat-treatment response is required, a precipitation-hardening spring grade may be more appropriate.
Rod preparation → multi-pass drawing → intermediate annealing as needed → final spring drawing → cleaning/coating → coil/spool conditioning → diameter and tensile verification → export packing.

Send your production specification: grade / standard, wire diameter and tolerance, condition or target mechanical properties, surface or coating, coil/spool/reel dimensions, unit weight, quantity, inspection documents, end use and destination port. Shangyou will review the applicable wire standard, production route, inspection plan and export packing before quotation.
1. Why is tensile strength not shown as one fixed value?
For stainless spring wire, required tensile strength changes with grade, wire diameter and ordered condition. A single grade-wide number can be misleading. Send the diameter and governing specification so the applicable tensile range can be confirmed.
2. Is ASTM A313 the correct standard for this spring wire?
ASTM A313/A313M is the primary ASTM spring-wire specification used for this page. Final compliance still depends on the exact 304 grade designation, diameter range, condition and any customer drawing requirements.
3. Can this wire be used for compression and extension springs?
It can be considered for compression, extension, torsion and formed spring components when the selected diameter, stress level, environment, forming route and fatigue requirement are suitable. Spring design remains the responsibility of the component designer.
4. Does cold drawing affect magnetism?
Yes. Cold work can increase magnetic response in austenitic grades such as 302, 304 and 316. If a spring assembly has a magnetic-permeability requirement, specify it together with the required mechanical properties.
5. Can the wire be supplied on precision spools?
Yes, subject to diameter and order quantity. For automated coiling, specify spool type, traversing quality, winding direction, payoff requirement, package weight and whether continuous lengths are required.
6. Do I need to specify spring temper?
Yes. A generic grade name is not enough for a spring order. Define the standard, wire diameter, required tensile range or condition, and any coil-cast, helix, straightness or surface requirements relevant to the spring-making process.
7. Can you provide tensile test reports?
Yes, when specified. Test reporting should identify the lot, diameter and condition tested. For critical spring programs, buyers should also define sampling frequency and whether additional bend, wrap or coil-characteristic checks are required.
8. Is this grade corrosion proof?
No stainless spring wire is corrosion proof in all media. Performance depends on chloride level, temperature, stress, crevices, deposits and surface condition. Grade selection should be based on the actual service environment.
9. Can spring wire be supplied straightened and cut?
Straightened and cut lengths may be quoted for suitable diameters and lengths. Straightness, cut-end condition and length tolerance should be defined because these requirements differ from coiled spring wire.
10. What should be included in the RFQ?
Provide grade, ASTM A313 or other governing standard, diameter and tolerance, target tensile or condition, surface/coating, coil or spool requirement, package weight, quantity, application, inspection plan and destination.
