17-4PH combines a martensitic structure with precipitation hardening. Its copper-bearing composition allows strength and hardness to be adjusted through aging heat treatment.
For procurement, the grade and heat treatment condition must be specified together. Two bars carrying the same S17400 identification can have different mechanical properties when supplied in different conditions. ASTM A564 covers age-hardening stainless steel bars and shapes, including Type 630 supplied in solution-treated or age-hardened condition.
This makes 17-4PH a useful material for components where strength, corrosion exposure and machining requirements must be considered together.
| Purchase Item | Specification / Information to Confirm |
|---|---|
| Product form | Solid round bar, round rod or cut machining blank |
| Material designation | 17-4PH / UNS S17400 / Type 630 |
| Main bar specification | ASTM A564/A564M; specify the required edition |
| Diameter | State the required diameter in millimetres or inches; availability depends on condition and finishing route |
| Length | Full-length material or cut blanks; specify usable length and cutting tolerance |
| Heat treatment | Condition A, H900, H1025, H1075 or H1150; other conditions require separate review |

| Commercial terms | Quantity, minimum order, delivery schedule and packing confirmed with the quotation |
EN 1.4542 is a commonly associated European designation. Where a European specification or AMS 5643 is required, identify it explicitly in the inquiry. Cross-certification must be verified against the actual material documents.
Need a particular diameter and condition? Send both together so the quotation can address the correct material route.
The heat treatment condition affects strength, hardness, ductility and subsequent manufacturing.
| Condition | Reference Aging Treatment* | Main Selection Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Condition A | Solution-treated starting condition | For a manufacturing route that includes subsequent aging; do not assume this is the finished service condition |
| H900 | 482°C / 900°F, 1 hour | Highest strength among these listed aged conditions; assess toughness and environmental requirements |
| H1025 | 552°C / 1025°F, 4 hours | Intermediate strength and ductility balance |
| H1075 | 579°C / 1075°F, 4 hours | Further reduction in strength with increased emphasis on ductility |
| H1150 | 621°C / 1150°F, 4 hours | Lower strength and hardness, with improved ductility relative to peak-aged material |
Reference aging treatments start from correctly solution-treated material and use air cooling. The governing specification and approved heat treatment procedure control production.
H925, H1100 and special conditions may also be specified. H1150, H1150D and H1150M must not be treated as interchangeable order descriptions.
Ordering only “17-4PH hardened bar” leaves a critical requirement undefined. State the condition shown on the drawing and any additional hardness or impact requirements.
The following ranges describe conventional 17-4PH / UNS S17400 chemistry. Values are percentages by mass; acceptance must follow the ordered specification and certified heat analysis.

These are published typical room-temperature results for Carpenter Custom 630. They illustrate the effect of condition and are not Shangyou shipment results or ASTM minimum requirements.
For an actual order, confirm the applicable specification, section size, test orientation, sampling requirements and delivery condition. Use the agreed acceptance criteria and corresponding material certificate to release the material for production.
If a drawing specifies both heat treatment and hardness, include both in the RFQ.
Selecting the correct bar finish can reduce unnecessary machining and help protect the finished-part dimensions.
| Starting Material | Procurement Consideration |
|---|---|
| Hot-worked bar | Allow sufficient stock for surface removal and final machining |
| Peeled or turned bar | Define the supplied diameter and remaining machining allowance |
| Ground bar | Specify diameter tolerance, straightness, roundness and Ra separately |
| Cut blank | Define usable length, end condition, squareness and deburring requirements |
Shangyou’s round-bar service information includes cutting, turning and grinding options; the achievable requirements should be confirmed for the particular order.
For example, a finished Ø50 mm component with 1 mm radial machining allowance requires a theoretical starting diameter of Ø52 mm, before accounting for stock tolerance, surface condition and the machining route.
A purchase description stating only “1 mm allowance” can cause confusion. Specify allowance per side or on diameter.
Confirm whether the production sequence requires rough machining before aging, or machining from already aged bar. Aging can change dimensions, so close-tolerance features may require finishing afterward.
A ground-bar diameter tolerance does not, by itself, guarantee the runout of a subsequently machined shaft.
Send the finished-part drawing when straightness, concentricity or machining allowance affects acceptance.
The following examples use an estimating density of 7.80 g/cm³:
Weight, kg/m ≈ 0.006126 × diameter², with diameter in millimetres.
| Diameter, mm | Calculated Weight, kg/m |
|---|---|
| 10 | 0.61 |
| 20 | 2.45 |
| 25 | 3.83 |
| 30 | 5.51 |
| 40 | 9.80 |
| 50 | 15.32 |
| 80 | 39.21 |
| 100 | 61.26 |
These are calculated examples, not a stock list. Actual weight varies with dimensions and material condition. The density assumption corresponds approximately to published H900 data.
Agree on the inspection scope before order confirmation, particularly for critical shafts, valve components and heavily machined parts.
| Inspection / Document | Requirement to Define |
|---|---|
| Chemical analysis | Grade limits and traceable heat analysis |
| Tensile testing | Required properties, test condition, sampling and specimen orientation |
| Hardness testing | Acceptance range, test method and sampling locations |
| PMI | Verification scope and identification records |
| Ultrasonic testing | Examination method, coverage, acceptance criteria and reporting |
| Dimensional inspection | Diameter, length, straightness, roundness and surface requirements |
| EN 10204 3.1 documentation | Required certificate content and connection to the supplied material |
| Third-party inspection | Witness points, inspection scope and document review before dispatch |
PMI confirms alloy identification; it does not independently establish an H900 or H1150 heat treatment condition.
For Condition A orders, check whether mechanical results on the certificate refer to the delivered material or to a separately aged test specimen. The distinction matters when planning subsequent processing.
Where bars are cut into smaller pieces, agree how material identification will be maintained through cutting, packing and receiving inspection.
Request an MTC sample and specify any supplementary testing with your inquiry.
17-4PH round bar is used as starting material for components such as pump shafts, valve stems, bushings, gears and fasteners.
| Component / Buyer | Information That Helps Define the Order |
|---|---|
| Pump and rotating-equipment shafts | Loading, final condition, straightness, machining allowance and internal inspection |
| Valve stems and related components | Operating medium, temperature, hardness and dimensional requirements |
| Pins, couplings and mechanical parts | Strength, ductility, fit and surface condition |
| CNC machining blanks | Supplied condition, stock allowance, cutting dimensions and quantity |
Grade selection should consider the actual operating environment. Peak-strength conditions can be more susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking, and chloride exposure requires particular attention.
For sour service, seawater exposure or a customer-controlled application, submit the governing material specification and service conditions for review.
If welding is part of the manufacturing route, define the welding and subsequent heat treatment requirements before purchasing bar. Welded regions must be evaluated for the required final properties.
A useful material quotation should answer more than the price per kilogram.
Send your specification to Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. for review of:
Material identity: Grade, product standard and required condition.
Production fit: Starting diameter, usable length, finish and machining allowance.
Inspection requirements: Standard testing and any additional acceptance criteria.
Documentation: Material certificates, identification and required inspection records.
Delivery scope: Quantity, packing, destination and requested shipment schedule.
For repeat purchases, include your existing purchase specification or an approved previous MTC. This helps identify differences before material is ordered.
Packing should match the finish, bar length and handling conditions.
Confirm protective wrapping, separators, bundle or crate identification, package weight and lifting arrangements with the order. Ground surfaces may require additional protection against handling damage.
For cut blanks, specify piece counts and identification requirements. Packing labels should correspond with the packing list and traceable material documentation.
These are commonly used identifiers for the same alloy family. A purchase order should still state the product standard and heat treatment condition, because the grade name alone does not define acceptance requirements.
H900 prioritizes strength and hardness. H1150 provides a different balance with lower strength and greater ductility. Select the condition required by the design and service environment; one should not be substituted for the other without approval.
Condition A identifies solution-treated material. It is commonly purchased for subsequent processing and aging. Confirm who is responsible for the final heat treatment and how the finished condition will be verified.
Yes. Its martensitic structure makes it magnetic in both the solution-treated and aged conditions. Magnetism alone is not a grade-verification method.
Include the diameter tolerance, length tolerance, straightness and surface roughness in your inquiry. The quotation should confirm which requirements can be achieved for the selected size and condition.
Specify EN 10204 3.1 documentation where required, together with any heat treatment, hardness, ultrasonic or third-party inspection reports. Confirm the document package before placing the order.
No. Submit the applicable project specification, service conditions and acceptance requirements. Grade identification or a heat treatment label alone is insufficient to establish compliance.
No. The exact AMS requirements, material route and certification must be checked. State AMS 5643 explicitly if it is required by the drawing or procurement specification.
These depend on diameter, condition, finish, quantity and additional processing or testing. Send the complete requirement so the quotation can confirm the applicable order quantity, sample options and delivery schedule.
Start with diameter × length, quantity and required condition. Add the material standard, tolerance, finish, inspection requirements and destination when available. Attach the drawing for precision parts.
Send your size, quantity and heat treatment condition to start the quotation.
For a more complete RFQ, include:
Material standard and grade.
Diameter × length and quantity.
Condition A or the required aged condition.
Diameter and cutting tolerances.
Surface finish and machining allowance.
Required certificates and supplementary inspection.
Destination and requested delivery date.
