Large-diameter welded pipe needs a complete class designation

Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. supplies ASTM A358/A358M electric-fusion-welded austenitic stainless steel pipe for process plants, corrosive service and high-temperature applications covered by the project specification. The order states the material grade, ASTM edition, pipe class, NPS or outside diameter, wall thickness, length, tolerance, end preparation and quantity. ASTM A358 pipe uses a continuous longitudinal seam weld. A circumferential line joining short pipe sections is not the manufacturing seam and should not be used to represent the product.

Class controls the welding and radiography basis

ASTM A358/A358M includes five classes with different welding and radiographic-examination requirements. For example, Class 1 and Class 3 include complete radiography under their respective weld configurations, while Class 2 has no radiography requirement and Class 5 uses spot radiography. The exact current standard and purchase order govern the final scope. Quality review can also cover plate certificates, heat treatment, weld records, dimensions, surface, straightness, end bevel, marking, hydrostatic testing and supplementary NDT. Reports identify the actual coverage rather than using a blanket '100% tested' statement.

Information required for project pipe

Buyers should provide the ASTM edition, grade, class, NPS or OD, wall thickness, length, dimensional tolerance, end bevel, weld-examination scope, hydrostatic requirement, heat treatment, supplementary tests, design code, EN 10204 document type and third-party hold points. The project should also define whether field weld fit-up, special ovality, internal surface, pickling and passivation or corrosion allowance requirements apply. Packing must account for lifting, nesting permission, end protection, package stability and the equipment available for unloading at site.
