A stainless steel angle bar is an L-shaped structural profile with two perpendicular legs. It is used to reinforce corners, build equipment frames, support platforms and connect structural components.
Stainless steel angles are divided into two main types:
Both legs have the same width, such as:
Equal angles are commonly used for frames, supports, brackets, racks and general fabrication.
The two legs have different widths, such as:
Unequal angles are selected when the structure requires different load distribution, connection space or installation clearance on each leg.

304 stainless steel is the most widely used grade for general structural and fabrication applications. It provides good corrosion resistance, formability, weldability and surface appearance.
Typical applications:
304 should not automatically be selected for continuously wet, high-chloride or aggressive marine environments.
304L has a lower carbon content than standard 304. It is commonly selected for welded structures where improved resistance to weld-related sensitization is required.
Recommended for:
The low-carbon grade should be confirmed through the material certificate and appropriate chemical analysis. Handheld XRF alone cannot independently verify the carbon content required to distinguish 304 from 304L.
316 contains molybdenum, providing improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared with 304 in many chloride-containing environments.
Typical applications:
316 offers improved chloride resistance, but suitability still depends on chloride concentration, temperature, crevice conditions, cleaning frequency and expected service life.
316L combines molybdenum alloying with a low carbon content. It is frequently selected for welded equipment, coastal installations and process plants requiring both corrosion resistance and reliable fabrication performance.
Common uses:
316L should not be described as universally resistant to seawater. Long-term immersion, high temperature, stagnant water and tight crevices may require duplex or higher-alloy materials.
321 is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel. It is used where components are exposed to elevated temperatures or where resistance to sensitization during high-temperature service is important.
Typical applications:
The actual service temperature must be evaluated according to loading, oxidation, thermal cycling and applicable design requirements.
310S contains higher chromium and nickel levels and is selected for improved oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
Typical applications:
310S provides high-temperature oxidation resistance but is not automatically suitable for every carburizing, sulfidizing or reducing atmosphere.
Duplex 2205 provides higher strength and improved chloride pitting resistance compared with common 304L and 316L austenitic grades.
Typical applications:
Duplex angle fabrication requires controlled welding procedures, suitable filler metals and proper heat-input management to maintain an acceptable ferrite–austenite phase balance.
430 is a ferritic stainless steel with good appearance and moderate corrosion resistance. It is magnetic and is generally used in less aggressive environments.
Typical applications:
430 is less resistant to chloride corrosion than 304 or 316 grades
| Grade | Main Characteristic | Recommended Environment |
|---|---|---|
| 201 | Economical, higher strength, lower nickel | Indoor decorative and light-duty use |
| 304 | General corrosion resistance and fabrication | General industrial and architectural use |
| 304L | Low carbon for welded fabrication | Welded structures and process equipment |
| 316 | Improved chloride resistance | Coastal, chemical and water-treatment use |
| 316L | Chloride resistance plus low carbon | Welded coastal and process applications |
| 321 | Stabilized for elevated-temperature service | Heat-resistant welded components |
| 310S | Improved high-temperature oxidation resistance | Furnaces and thermal equipment |
| 2205 | Higher strength and chloride resistance | Chemical, offshore and desalination projects |
| 430 | Magnetic, economical ferritic grade | Indoor and mildly corrosive environments |
Material selection should be based on the actual operating environment rather than grade name alone. Important factors include temperature, chloride concentration, chemical exposure, crevice design, cleaning conditions, welding method and required service life.
Typical maximum or nominal composition values are shown for preliminary comparison. The final Mill Test Certificate and specified product standard govern the delivered material.

For structural calculations, engineers should use the certified properties, section dimensions and applicable design code instead of relying only on typical catalogue values.
Hot-rolled angles are produced as integral structural profiles. They are commonly selected for load-bearing frames, industrial supports and heavy fabrication.
Advantages:
Hot-rolled products normally have a mill, annealed or pickled surface rather than a decorative bright finish.
Cold-drawn angles are used when tighter dimensional control, sharper appearance or a brighter surface is required.
Advantages:
Cold-drawn sections may have different mechanical properties from annealed hot-rolled sections due to work hardening.
Formed angles are produced from stainless steel sheet or plate by bending. They are suitable for thin sections, unusual leg widths, custom thicknesses or decorative finishes.
Important purchasing points:
A press-brake formed angle is not dimensionally identical to a hot-rolled angle. The bend radius and corner geometry must be considered during assembly.
Custom heavy or non-standard angle sections can be produced by cutting, bending or welding stainless steel plate.
This option may be used when the project requires:
The drawing should clearly specify dimensions, tolerances, weld requirements, surface condition and inspection criteria.
| Surface | Description | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-Rolled Pickled | Cleaned mill surface with industrial appearance | Structural frames and equipment |
| Annealed | Heat-treated surface condition | General fabrication |
| Bright / Cold-Drawn | Smoother and brighter finish | Precision and decorative parts |
| 180 Grit | Coarse polished surface | Industrial fabrication |
| 240 Grit | General satin finish | Architectural and equipment use |
| 320 Grit | Finer polished finish | Food equipment and decoration |
| Hairline | Directional decorative finish | Architectural projects |
| Mirror Polish | Highly reflective surface | Premium decorative applications |
| Passivated | Chemically treated after fabrication | Corrosion-sensitive components |
For polished products, the buyer should confirm the grit, polishing direction, acceptable scratch level, protective film and whether all surfaces or only visible surfaces require polishing.
Stainless steel angle bars may be supplied according to one or more of the following standards, depending on the grade, manufacturing method and project requirements:
Not every standard applies to every angle manufacturing route. The purchase order should separately identify the material grade, dimensional standard, tolerance requirement, inspection document and intended application.
The theoretical weight of an angle depends on:
A simplified calculation for an angle without considering corner radii is:
Cross-sectional area:
A = t * (a + b − t)
Where:
Approximate weight per metre:
Weight = A * density
For austenitic stainless steel, a general density reference of approximately 7.9–8.0 g/cm³ may be used for preliminary estimates. Duplex and ferritic grades may have different densities.
The actual shipping weight should be calculated from the confirmed section drawing or verified by weighing because corner radius, dimensional tolerance and manufacturing method affect the final result.
Angle bars can be cut to project lengths to reduce onsite labour and material waste.
Available options include:
Buyers should specify the required length tolerance and whether the cut ends must be deburred.
Custom holes and slots can be produced according to drawings.
Please provide:
Stainless steel angle bars can be welded by TIG, MIG or other qualified welding methods.
Important controls include:
Duplex and high-alloy grades require qualified welding procedures and more careful control than common 304 or 316 grades.
Polishing can be applied to visible surfaces or the complete profile.
Before ordering, confirm:
Our stainless steel angle inspection can include:
PMI testing is useful for verifying major alloying elements such as chromium, nickel and molybdenum. However, handheld XRF cannot independently determine carbon content and should not be used alone to distinguish low-carbon L grades.
Depending on the order specification:
Testing requirements must be agreed before production because they may affect sampling, lead time and price.
Stainless steel angle bars are used to build:
Applications include:
304L and 316L stainless steel angles are used in:
Surface finish, drainage design and cleanability should be considered in hygienic environments.
Typical uses include:
The stainless steel grade should be selected according to the actual chemical, concentration, temperature and cleaning process.
316L or duplex 2205 may be selected for:
Grade selection should account for direct salt spray, immersion, crevices, surface finish, maintenance and design life.
321 and 310S angles can be used for:
The design must account for oxidation, creep strength, thermal expansion and repeated heating cycles.
| Comparison | Equal Angle | Unequal Angle |

The terms are commonly used to describe the same L-shaped stainless steel profile. “Angle bar" is usually preferred in technical specifications, while “angle iron" remains a common commercial term even when the material is stainless steel rather than carbon steel.
Yes. Equal-leg, unequal-leg and custom-formed L-shaped profiles are available. The exact size range depends on the grade, thickness, production method and ordered quantity.
304 is suitable for many normal outdoor environments. 316 or 316L is generally preferred for coastal or chloride-exposed locations. Duplex 2205 may be considered for more demanding chloride environments and higher-strength requirements.
No. 316L has better chloride resistance than 304, but it can still suffer pitting or crevice corrosion under long-term immersion, elevated temperature, stagnant conditions or tight crevices. Service conditions must be reviewed before grade selection.
Yes. Polished, brushed, satin and mirror-finished angles can be supplied. Please specify the required grit, polishing direction, visible surfaces and scratch acceptance criteria.
Yes. We provide fixed-length cutting, mitre cutting and batch cutting. Length tolerance and end-finishing requirements should be specified before production.
Yes. Hole drilling, slotting, laser cutting and related machining services are available according to customer drawings.
EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates are commonly available. Third-party inspection and additional testing can be arranged when specified before production.
PMI can identify major alloying elements, but handheld XRF does not measure carbon accurately enough to independently confirm an L-grade designation. The low-carbon grade should be verified through the material certificate and suitable chemical analysis.
The minimum order quantity depends on the grade, dimensions, production process and stock availability. Small quantities may be available from existing stock, while custom-formed or special-size angles normally require a production minimum.
Choose hot-rolled angle for common structural sizes and integral sections. Choose formed angle when you need a non-standard leg width, thin wall, special surface finish or controlled custom dimensions.
Yes, subject to size and production availability. Duplex fabrication requires appropriate welding procedures, filler metal and heat-input control.
