Precision Means Controlling the Whole Strip, Not Only Thickness

A precision strip order should define the functional characteristics that affect the customer’s line: gauge consistency, slit width, edge quality, camber, coil build, hardness and surface. A very tight thickness target is of limited value if burr, coil telescoping or width variation causes feeding problems.

The appropriate tolerance level depends on material strength, thickness-to-width ratio, slit width, temper and production route. For this reason, Shangyou confirms the tolerance package against the actual RFQ instead of advertising one universal “±0.005 mm” claim across all strip products.

Material Selection Boundary

Choose 301 when cold-worked strength and spring response are dominant; 304 when balanced forming and general corrosion resistance are needed; 316L when the service environment requires improved pitting resistance relative to 304. Precision rolling or slitting does not change the fundamental corrosion limitations of the selected grade.

1. What makes stainless steel strip “precision”?

Precision strip is controlled against agreed dimensional, mechanical, edge, surface and coil-handling requirements rather than only nominal size.

2. Can you guarantee one tolerance for every gauge?

No. Achievable tolerances depend on thickness, width, grade, temper and processing route and must be confirmed per RFQ.

3. Can camber be specified?

Yes. If strip tracking is critical, include camber or straightness requirements in the purchase specification.

4. Can burr direction be controlled?

Where the slitting route allows, burr direction and/or maximum burr can be defined in the order.

5. Which grades are common for precision strip?

301, 304 and 316L are frequent choices, but the correct grade depends on strength, forming and corrosion requirements.

6. Can you supply narrow widths?

Yes, subject to minimum practical slit width for the requested thickness, temper and edge condition.

7. How is thickness measured?

The inspection method and sampling plan can be agreed; precision orders commonly use calibrated thickness measurement at defined positions.

8. Can mechanical properties be specified instead of hardness?

Yes. Depending on the governing standard and grade, tensile strength, yield strength or hardness targets may be more appropriate.

9. Is protective film available?

It can be discussed for surfaces where film is suitable and does not interfere with downstream processing.

10. What should I send for a repeat-production program?

Send drawing/specification, annual or monthly volume, coil size limits, tolerance package and any line-feeding requirements so the supply condition can be stabilized.
