What Is 301 Stainless Steel Coil?

301 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel with a nominal composition of approximately 17% chromium and 7% nickel. Compared with the more stable 304 grade, its lower chromium and nickel content gives 301 a less stable austenitic structure and a stronger response to cold deformation.

During cold rolling or forming, part of the austenitic structure can transform into strain-induced martensite. This transformation produces rapid work hardening, higher strength and increased magnetic response. Properly annealed 301 is essentially austenitic, while heavily cold-worked material can become noticeably magnetic.

This combination makes 301 particularly suitable where the buyer requires:

  • Higher strength than annealed 304
  • Spring performance and elastic recovery
  • Thin-gauge components with high load capacity
  • Good ductility before cold working
  • Decorative metallic appearance
  • Reduced component weight through thinner material

301 is not hardened by conventional heat treatment. Its high-strength conditions are primarily obtained through controlled cold reduction.

Applicable Standards
ASTM A240/A240M

ASTM A240/A240M covers chromium, chromium-nickel and chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for pressure-vessel and general applications. It specifies chemical composition and mechanical-property requirements for the material covered by the purchase order.

ASTM A666/A666M

ASTM A666/A666M is particularly relevant when 301 is ordered in annealed or cold-worked conditions. It covers austenitic stainless steel sheet, strip, plate and flat bar and includes requirements for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, hardness and bend performance.

EN 10088-2

For European projects, 301 is commonly identified as EN 1.4310. The required delivery condition may be specified using EN strength classifications or a defined proof-strength and tensile-strength range.

Important Engineering Boundary

Specifying ASTM A666 material does not automatically qualify a cold-worked coil for pressure-vessel construction. Pressure-equipment acceptance must be checked against the applicable design code, material condition, standard edition and project specification. ASTM notes that only annealed conditions of specifically approved grades are permitted for pressure-vessel use under the relevant ASME provisions.

Chemical Composition of 301 Stainless Steel

The following limits are representative of current ASTM-listed 301 material. The final chemical composition must be verified against the applicable standard edition and the supplied material certificate.

Element Composition
Carbon, C ≤0.15%
Manganese, Mn ≤2.00%
Silicon, Si ≤1.00%
Phosphorus, P ≤0.045%
Sulfur, S ≤0.030%
Chromium, Cr 16.00–18.00%
Nickel, Ni 6.00–8.00%
Nitrogen, N ≤0.10%
Iron, Fe Balance

The chromium and nickel balance supports an austenitic structure in the annealed condition while allowing strong work hardening during cold reduction.

Mechanical Properties by Temper

301 stainless steel can be supplied in different cold-worked conditions. The required temper should be selected according to the part geometry, forming operation, spring force, fatigue requirement and final dimensional tolerance.

The following values are reference minimum room-temperature properties associated with ASTM A240 and ASTM A666 material conditions. Final acceptance must follow the purchase order, standard edition, thickness range and certified test results.

Condition Tensile Strength, Min. 0.2% Yield Strength, Min. Elongation, Min.
Annealed 515 MPa 205 MPa 40%
1/4 Hard 862 MPa 517 MPa 25%
1/2 Hard 1,034 MPa 758 MPa 18%
3/4 Hard 1,207 MPa 931 MPa 12%
Full Hard 1,276 MPa 965 MPa 9%

Elongation requirements can vary with material thickness and the applicable specification.

Typical Hardness Reference
Condition Typical Brinell Hardness Typical Rockwell Hardness
Annealed 165 HB 85 HRB
1/4 Hard 255 HB 25 HRC
1/2 Hard 297 HB 32 HRC
3/4 Hard 342 HB 37 HRC
Full Hard 382 HB 41 HRC

These hardness figures are typical reference values rather than universal acceptance limits. The buyer should define whether the order is controlled by temper designation, tensile-strength range, yield strength, hardness or a combination of properties.

“Full hard" does not describe one universal tensile value for every thickness and specification. The required tensile-strength range, hardness, direction of testing and tolerances should be stated on the purchase order.

301 Stainless Steel Coil Performance
High Work-Hardening Rate

The main advantage of 301 is its ability to develop high tensile and yield strength through cold rolling. Outokumpu classifies 301/1.4310 as a high-work-hardening stainless steel intended for components exposed to high mechanical loading.

This characteristic allows manufacturers to produce thinner parts while retaining stiffness and load capacity. However, it also means that forming force, tooling wear and springback can be higher than with more stable austenitic grades.

Corrosion Resistance

301 provides useful resistance to atmospheric corrosion and many mild industrial environments. However, its general corrosion resistance is below that of conventional 18-8 grades such as 304 because of its lower chromium and nickel content.

It is not the preferred grade for:

  • Marine splash zones
  • Chloride-rich environments
  • Strong reducing chemicals
  • Continuously wet chemical equipment
  • Heavily welded components exposed to corrosive media

ATI notes that 301 is more susceptible to carbide precipitation during welding and may be replaced by 304 or 304L when welded corrosion resistance is important.

Magnetic Response

Annealed 301 is normally close to non-magnetic. Cold working promotes martensite formation and increases magnetic permeability. Therefore, a magnet test cannot be used as a reliable grade-verification method for cold-rolled 301.

For applications requiring tightly controlled magnetic permeability, the buyer should specify:

  • Maximum permeability
  • Material temper
  • Cold-reduction level
  • Measurement method
  • Testing direction
  • Acceptance temperature
Fatigue Performance

Cold rolling can improve the fatigue endurance of 301 compared with the annealed condition. This is one reason the grade is frequently selected for springs and cyclically loaded components. Actual fatigue life remains dependent on surface condition, edge quality, stress concentration, forming radius, residual stress and operating environment.

301 vs 304 Stainless Steel Coil
Selection Factor 301 Stainless Steel 304 Stainless Steel
Main Advantage High work-hardening capability Better general-purpose corrosion resistance
Strength After Cold Rolling Very high Moderate to high
Formability in Annealed State Good Very good
Spring Applications Preferred for many spring parts Used where moderate strength is sufficient
Magnetic Response After Forming Can become strongly magnetic Can also become magnetic, generally less rapidly
Welding in Corrosive Service Requires careful assessment 304L is generally preferred
Chloride Resistance Limited Limited, but generally better than 301
Typical Products Springs, clips, clamps and high-strength strip Equipment, tanks, kitchen products and general fabrication

Choose 301 when high strength, elastic recovery and work-hardening response are the primary design requirements.

Choose 304 or 304L when corrosion resistance, welding performance and general fabrication are more important than maximum cold-worked strength. ATI identifies 301 as having lower corrosion performance than 18-8 chromium-nickel stainless steels, while Outokumpu describes 301/1.4310 as a high-work-hardening grade for mechanically loaded parts.

Surface Finish Options
2B Finish

A smooth, cold-rolled and annealed surface suitable for general stamping, forming and industrial components.

BA Finish

A bright-annealed surface used when improved appearance, cleanliness or reflectivity is required.

2H / Temper-Rolled Finish

A work-hardened finish associated with controlled cold rolling. Mechanical properties should be specified together with the required strength class or temper.

Polished Finish

No.4, brushed and other polished finishes may be supplied for decorative or visible components. Polishing requirements should identify the target roughness, direction and acceptable appearance standard.

Protective Film

PE or PVC protective film can be applied to help reduce scratching during cutting, stamping, transport and assembly.

Edge Condition for Precision Strip

Edge condition has a direct effect on spring fatigue, stamping performance and operator safety.

Available edge options include:

  • Mill Edge: Original edge from the rolling process
  • Slit Edge: Standard rotary-slit edge
  • Deburred Edge: Reduced burr for handling and stamping
  • Rounded Edge: Edge-conditioned profile for spring and precision applications
  • Special Edge: Produced according to drawing or approved reference sample

For precision spring strip, the inquiry should identify:

  • Maximum edge burr
  • Burr orientation
  • Edge radius
  • Camber tolerance
  • Width tolerance
  • Flatness requirement
  • Surface-defect acceptance
  • Grain or rolling direction

Forming and Fabrication Guidance
Cold Forming

301 has good forming capability in the annealed condition, but work hardens rapidly. Progressive forming operations may require:

  • Higher forming force
  • Larger forming radii
  • Springback compensation
  • Robust tooling
  • Controlled lubrication
  • Intermediate annealing for severe forming

The required temper should be chosen based on the forming operation rather than strength alone.

Springback

Springback increases as material strength and temper increase. Tool design should be validated using material from the intended production temper and thickness, not only nominal grade data.

Welding

301 can be welded using conventional stainless steel welding processes. However, welding can reduce locally cold-worked strength and may create heat-affected areas with different mechanical and corrosion behavior.

For welded components used in corrosive service, evaluate:

  • Heat input
  • Joint design
  • Filler selection
  • Sensitization risk
  • Post-weld cleaning
  • Final corrosion requirement

Where extensive welding and corrosion resistance are both critical, 304L may be a more suitable material choice.

Heat Treatment

301 is not strengthened by quench-and-temper heat treatment. Strength is obtained through cold working.

A reference solution-annealing range is approximately 1,010–1,121°C, followed by sufficiently rapid cooling to minimize carbide precipitation. Heat treatment should be performed under a qualified procedure appropriate to the material thickness and final application.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 301 stainless steel suitable for springs?

Yes. Its high work-hardening rate allows 301 to achieve high tensile and yield strength through cold rolling, making it widely used for flat springs, retaining clips and other elastic components. The correct temper must be selected according to the required forming and spring performance.

What is the difference between 301 half hard and full hard?

Half hard retains more elongation and forming capability. Full hard provides higher strength and hardness but allows less bending and forming. The purchase order should specify the required mechanical-property range rather than relying only on the temper name.

Is 301 stainless steel magnetic?

Annealed 301 is normally close to non-magnetic. Cold rolling and forming can produce strain-induced martensite, causing the material to become magnetic.

Is 301 more corrosion resistant than 304?

No. 304 generally provides better corrosion resistance. 301 is normally selected because it develops higher strength through cold working.

Can 301 stainless steel be welded?

Yes, but welding can change the mechanical properties around the joint and may increase sensitization concerns. For heavily welded components in corrosive service, 304L may be a better choice.

Can 301 be hardened by heat treatment?

No. 301 is primarily hardened through cold working. Solution annealing softens the material and restores ductility.

What standard should be used for 301 spring strip?

ASTM A666/A666M is commonly used for annealed and cold-worked austenitic stainless steel sheet and strip. The order should also state the temper, tensile range, thickness, edge and dimensional tolerances.

Can XRF confirm that the material is full hard 301?

No. XRF can screen major alloying elements but cannot verify temper, tensile strength or hardness. Mechanical testing is required to confirm the supplied condition.

Can you supply narrow-width 301 strip?

Yes. Coil slitting, edge deburring and customized coil weight are available according to thickness, width tolerance and order quantity.

What information is needed for a spring-material quotation?

Provide the grade, standard, temper, thickness, width, edge profile, tensile-strength range, hardness, forming direction, coil ID, quantity and final spring application.
