Product Description

Nickel Alloy 400 | UNS N04400 | 2.4360 | Monel 400

Shaanxi Shangyou Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. supplies Nickel Alloy 400, also known as Monel 400, identified as UNS N04400 and Werkstoff 2.4360 (and 2.4361), in plate, sheet, strip, round bar, rod, seamless and welded tubing, pipe, and forging forms . Our Alloy 400 products can be supplied according to ASTM B127 / ASME SB-127 for plate, sheet and strip; ASTM B164 / ASME SB-164 for bar and wire; ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165 for seamless pipe and tube; ASTM B725 / ASME SB-725 for welded pipe; and ASTM B564 / ASME SB-564 for forgings .

Nickel Alloy 400 is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy that can be hardened only by cold working . The high nickel content (minimum 63%) provides excellent resistance to reducing environments and alkaline solutions, while the copper content (28-34%) extends resistance to non-oxidising acids and seawater . The alloy has been in continuous industrial service since 1905 and remains one of the most consistently specified nickel alloys for marine engineering, chemical processing, and oil and gas applications .

Heat Treatment Conditions

Solution Annealed

Alloy 400 is normally supplied in the annealed condition. The standard annealing treatment is performed at approximately 870 – 980°C (1,600 – 1,800°F) followed by rapid cooling . This treatment provides optimal corrosion resistance and ductility for forming and fabrication. Unlike age-hardenable alloys, Alloy 400 does not require precipitation aging treatments—it is a solid-solution alloy that is hardened only through cold working .

Cold Working / Spring Temper

Alloy 400 is not age-hardenable – strength increases only through cold working. Annealed material typically exhibits tensile strength of 70 – 90 ksi (480 – 620 MPa), while spring temper can achieve up to 180 ksi (1,240 MPa) . The alloy remains ductile even at subzero temperatures and can be cold-formed using standard fabrication methods .

Corrosion Resistance and Selection Limits

Alloy 400 provides excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, particularly in marine and chemical applications .

Key Corrosion Characteristics:

  • Excellent resistance to seawater and brackish water, even under high-velocity conditions – one of the very few alloys to resist erosion-corrosion and cavitation reliably
  • Outstanding resistance to hydrofluoric acid (HF) across all concentrations – no standard stainless steel grade matches this performance
  • Good resistance to sulfuric acid up to 80% concentration at room temperature; resistant to deaerated hydrochloric acid
  • Excellent resistance to alkaline solutions (NaOH, KOH) across most concentrations
  • Resistant to chloride ion stress-corrosion cracking
  • Good resistance to steam at elevated temperatures – widely specified for steam line components
  • Slightly magnetic at room temperature; becomes non-magnetic above approximately 40°C

Selection Considerations:

  • Not resistant to oxidising environments – nitric acid, aerated hydrochloric acid, ferric chloride solutions, and other oxidising media will corrode it rapidly
  • Aeration of hydrochloric acid significantly increases corrosion rates
  • For applications requiring even higher strength, consider Alloy K-500 (precipitation-hardened variant)
  • Final selection must consider the specific medium, concentration, temperature, and whether the environment is oxidising or reducing
Typical Applications
  • Marine Engineering: Propeller shafts, pumps, valves, marine fixtures and fasteners in seawater environments
  • Chemical Processing: Heat exchangers, tanks, evaporators, transfer piping, process vessels, pickling bath heating coils
  • Oil and Gas: Crude oil distillation towers, offshore equipment, transfer piping from refinery columns, cladding for crude column upper areas
  • Hydrocarbon Processing: Equipment for chlorinated plastics, perchlorethylene, monoethanolamine (MEA) reboiling tubes
  • Power Generation: Feed water and steam generator tubing, boiler feedwater heaters
  • Salt Production: Equipment for salt and brine handling
