Actual properties depend on product form, dimensions, heat-treatment cycle, and the specified ASTM, ASME or AMS standard.
Solution Annealed (AMS 5596 / AMS 5662)
Recommended when the material requires forming, welding or rough machining. Solution treatment temperature: 1,725°F – 1,850°F (940-1,010°C) followed by air cooling.
Solution Annealed and Aged (AMS 5597 / AMS 5663)
Used when the finished component requires the characteristic high strength of Alloy 718. A commonly used aging cycle includes holding at 1,325°F (718°C) for 8 hours, controlled furnace cooling at 100°F/hr to 1,150°F (621°C), holding for a total aging time of 18 hours, and final air cooling.
Typical aged properties: tensile strength 185 ksi (1,275 MPa) minimum, yield strength 150 ksi (1,034 MPa) minimum, elongation 12% minimum, hardness ≥ 331 HB.
Alternative Solution Treatment (AMS 5664)
For tensile-limited applications requiring improved transverse ductility in heavy sections. Solution treatment: 1,900°F – 1,950°F (1,038-1,066°C) followed by aging at 1,400°F (760°C) for 10 hours, furnace cool to 1,200°F (650°C), hold for total aging time of 20 hours, air cool.
Alloy 718 provides excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and general corrosion in many oil and gas and chemical environments. The additions of niobium and molybdenum, along with aluminum and titanium, result in excellent corrosion resistance in oil and gas applications and high strength properties.
However, selection considerations include:
Available quality-control services include:
PMI can identify major alloying elements but cannot independently verify carbon content, heat-treatment condition, mechanical properties or NACE compliance.

Nickel Alloy 718 is an age-hardenable nickel-chromium-iron alloy designed for high strength, fatigue resistance and creep performance up to 700°C.
The UNS designation is N07718; the European Werkstoff number is 2.4668.
ASTM B670 and AMS 5596/AMS 5597 are commonly used for Alloy 718 plate, sheet and strip.
ASTM B637, ASME SB-637, AMS 5662, AMS 5663 and AMS 5664 are commonly specified for round bar, rod, forgings and forging stock.
Yes. Solution-annealed material alone does not provide the full strength associated with Alloy 718. Full strength is developed through precipitation aging heat treatment.
In the aged condition (AMS 5663), typical tensile strength is 185 ksi (1,275 MPa) minimum, yield strength is 150 ksi (1,034 MPa) minimum, elongation is 12% minimum, and hardness is ≥ 331 HB.
It provides useful chloride resistance, but it is not immune to pitting and crevice corrosion. Alloy 625 may be more suitable for severe seawater exposure.
Alloy 718 is generally selected for higher mechanical strength after aging. Alloy 625 is more commonly selected for broad marine and chemical corrosion resistance.
Yes. Welding should normally be performed in the solution-annealed condition using a qualified welding procedure and controlled heat input.
Not automatically. Compliance depends on controlled chemistry limits, specific heat treatment, hardness (≤ 40 HRC), product form, and verification of the actual sour-service environmental conditions.
